March SpiceScription Reveal

March’s featured spice is Coriander!

In California, fresh leafy cilantro is readily available year round. As much as we use cilantro, coriander, the seed of the cilantro plant, is often overlooked in our spice racks, so we are excited to feature this spice!

There are many different types of coriander native to different parts of the world. The coriander seed used in the United States as a spice is related to the parsley plant. Its sweet mellow flavor with hints of pepper and citrus is extremely versatile as it pairs with both sweet and savory flavors.

March’s SpiceScription Exclusive Recipes

Spiced Hazelnut Butter

While peanut butter is the nut butter you’ll most likely find in American cupboards, elsewhere, hazelnut butter wins the nut butter popularity contest! This spiced nut butter recipe uses both dukkah and coriander. Dukkah is an Egyptian blend of whole spices (including coriander) and nuts. This recipe blends up the spice part of dukkah, additional coriander, and hazelnuts into a delicious spread!

Eliah’s Mom’s Spicy Beef

Does your mom have a recipe everyone asks her to make!? This is the recipe we all ask Eliah’s mom to make! The beef is flavored with soy sauce, white wine, a bit of coriander seed, and as much crushed red pepper as you want! The dark savory flavor of soy sauce, and the crisp white wine are complimented nicely by the citrusy earthy flavors of coriander!

Emily’s Mom’s Sweet and Sour Cabbage

While traveling in Europe last summer, Emily saw cabbage dishes on menus in almost every restaurant she visited! It made her reflect and realize in the United States cabbage just isn’t used enough! And she fondly thought back to growing up when her German mother regularly made cabbage dishes. One of her favorites was this sweet and sour cabbage recipe.
