We recently created a blend of chai spices and mixed it together with sugar to make the most amazing fall flavored cupcakes. Of course, there was a bit of this delicious flavored sugar left over, which just happened to make it into our next morning’s oatmeal and coffee the next day! At that point, it became apparent this chai flavored sugar needed to be a recipe on its own!

And it couldn’t be easier! All the amazing spices that are found in a traditional masala chai are stirred together with sugar!

What Exactly is Chai? Or Masala Chai?

Chai simply means tea. Masala means spice. Put them together and you have a tea flavored with spices! Here in the United States, Chai usually means a black tea brewed with spices. Often, you’ll see chai latte, which is a black tea brewed with spices served with milk and sugar (the traditional way to serve chai in India).

Though we think of Chai (or Masala Chai) as one type of tea, there are many different types of Masala Chai Teas.

What Spices Are in Masala Chai?

As mentioned above, chai tea can be made with many different spices! The spices we’ve included in our Chai Spice Sugar Blend include:

Ground Vietnamese Cinnamon

Ground Ginger Powder

Ground Cardamom

Nutmeg

Allspice

Ground cloves

Ground black pepper

All these spices simply get stirred into your favorite sugar! That’s all!

And then you have a flavor bomb to add to your next batch of pancake batter! Or make an amazing chai version of cinnamon toast! How about spicing up a batch of homemade applesauce?!

Add to a cup of tea, sprinkle on sugar cookies, your tongue, or just about anything else that needs a burst of fall flavor!
