Welcome to January’s Tea of the Month Box! The new beginning of a year is often a time to focus on healthy actions. We picked this month’s teas with these actions in mind.
Eliah blends C St. Sunshine in house using second flush organic bancha tea, yerba mate, ginger, citrus, turmeric, and a touch of pink pepper to create a tea as bright and sunny as the view at the top of C Street. The green grassy notes of the bancha tea bring a balance to the earthy flavors of yerba mate. While bancha has a bit less caffeine than first flush green teas, the yerba mate in this mix makes up for that caffeine as it has the strength of coffee.
The health benefits of this blend includes plenty of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and theobromines. Theobromine is the same compound found in chocolate that creates a happy feeling. A cup of this tea is perfect for those dark days of January when you need a pick me up.
Brew as a green tea. 1 teaspoon of tea in 6-8 ounces of 170° for 2 minutes.
Our herbal wellness tea contains both elderberry and echinacea leaf and root. We included this tea in this box as these ingredients have been proven to boost immune systems–something that comes in handy as we spend more time indoors around others. Elderberries have also been proven to lessen and shorten the length of cold symptoms. This herbal tea contains no caffeine and is a nice way to end a long day.
This is an herbal tea and can be brewed at a stronger strength, a hotter temperature, and for a much longer time than other teas. 1 Tablespoon of tea with boiling water for 10-15 minutes.
Gunpowder Green Tea gets its name because it is rolled into small pellets which resembled gunpowder in the 1700s. It is a Chinese tea which is wok dried adding a smoky flavor to its grassiness. The shape of the leaves actually help this green tea retain its nutrients longer than other green teas. As with all green teas, this tea is rich in antioxidants. Many studies show these antioxidants can help neutralize free radicals which may cause heart disease, some types of arthritis, and other degenerative diseases.
As a green tea, brew 1/2-1 teaspoon to 6-8 ounces of water at 170° F for 2-3 minutes. We enjoy re-brewing these leaves 2-3 times.
Be sure not to miss your Tea Practic Card!
January’s Tea Practice focuses on using tea to stay hydrated. During the colder months, we tend to forget to focus on staying hydrated. Many studies show that staying properly hydrated helps to boost our immune systems, fight infections, and even keep us warmer!
Even teas with caffeine have been shown to be helpful with hydration. We challenge you this month to look to tea when thinking about ways to drink more liquids for proper hydration.
Treat Time
And last but certainly not least, our treat this month is Torres Black Truffle Chips! Hopefully these lush chips bring a little luxury to the dreary days of January. We especially enjoy the salty truffle flavor with the toasty notes of Gunpowder green tea.
If this is your first box, you’ll find a Tea Journal and Infuser tucked inside your box. Take notes and keep track of the teas you enjoy in your Tea Journal and over time you will become not only a tea enjoyer, but also a tea connoisseur! If you’d like to share on social media a picture of the journal page with your favorite tea from this box, we’d love for you to hashtag that picture #SpiceTopiaTEA, so we can follow along on your tea journey!
