Yes, we combined the comforting goodness of golden milk with the classic sweet gooey, and crunchy rice krispy treat!
Rice Krispy Treats are one of those iconic childhood favorites, but as adults, we tend to find them a tad bit sweet and one note. By combining the chai-like flavors of Golden Milk with the traditional Rice Krispies recipe, that sweetness is balanced out with earthy warm flavors.
What Exactly is Golden Milk? And Why Add It to Rice Krispy Squares?
Golden milk is a variation of traditional Indian Haldi doodh, a hot milk and turmeric drink.
What are the ingredients in Golden Milk?
Think of golden milk as steamed milk that is mixed with turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, and sweetener. It reminds us a bit of eggnog!
In this Rice Krispy Treat variation, we use sweetened condensed milk for the milk component of golden milk and SpiceTopia’s Daily Turmeric Blend for the spices!
This blend of turmeric and warm sweet spices such as cinnamon, ginger, pepper, and cardamom makes it easy and tasty to add the health benefits of turmeric to lots of everyday foods like rice krispy treats!
So if you’ve ever thought, “Are Rice Krispy Treats Healthy,” perhaps this recipe is – just a bit!
Vegan Golden Milk Rice Krispy Treats
This recipe can be adapted to a plant-based or vegan diet by using vegan butter or coconut oil.
You will also need to use vegan marshmallows which are made with seaweed carrageenan or soy protein instead of animal-derived gelatin.
And switch out the sweetened condensed milk with coconut-sweetened condensed milk.
Ingredients
Marshmallows. Use the marshmallows of your choice. This recipe calls for large marshmallows, but small marshmallows or marshmallow creme will also work.
1 cup of mini marshmallows = 8 large marshmallows = 5 ounces of marshmallow creme
If you want to make vegan rice krispy treats, be sure to use vegan marshmallows which are made with seaweed carrageenan or soy protein instead of animal-derived gelatin.
Sweetened Condensed Milk. Sweetened Condensed Milk adds the milk portion of the Golden Milk. And an added benefit of adding sweetened condensed milk? Super soft rice krispy treats that stay soft for days!
Butter. When cooking and baking, we usually suggest using unsalted butter. In rice krispy treats where sweet is the predominant flavor, the extra bit of salt in salted butter works. Again, this is an ingredient that needs adjusting if you are making vegan rice krispy treats. Substitute a vegan butter or coconut oil.
Rice Krispies Cereal. We know this recipe is from a big-brand cereal company, and yet, any brand of cereal will work!
Seasonings.
Daily Turmeric Blend. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic practices for 1000s of years. The Western World is just beginning to understand its role in health. Studies have shown it can help relieve inflammation, help prevent heart disease, and relieve depression. With all these valuable benefits, we’d like to help you include it in your diet often, so our turmeric blends were created!
SpiceTopia’s Daily Turmeric Blend is a tasty organic blend of turmeric mixed with cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and cardamom that’s easy to sprinkle on the foods you eat every day! This is our favorite blend! We love it added to our oatmeal, coffee, and smoothies.
Pacific Flake Sea Salt. Oftentimes desserts are just sweet. Adding just a bit of salt helps to balance out the sweetness.
