Dark Chocolate Bacon Rice Krispy Treats

As spice people, we’re always looking for ways to add new flavors to everyday foods, and that doesn’t stop at desserts! Sometimes it works out and sometimes it is an epic fail! It turns out that adding bacon salt to rice krispy treats with dark chocolate is one of those wins. The bacon salt adds a nice balance to the sweetness of the marshmallow and the bitterness of the dark chocolate in these and rice krispies treats.

And when you are craving a delicious no bake treat, this variation of rice krispy treat can fulfill that craving in just 15 minutes.

Are Rice Krispy Treats Vegan?

The traditional homemade rice krispy treat recipe is not vegan. But it is easy to change this recipe up to a vegan recipe. See our ingredients list below for the simple substitutions.

Are Rice Krispy Treats Gluten-Free?

Yes, rice krispy treats are naturally gluten-free.

Ingredients.

Bacon Salt.

The smoky bacon flavor of Bacon Salt comes from pure sea salt mixed with organic herbs and spices blended to taste just like the delicious smoky flavor of bacon – in a vegan form!

Vanilla Extract.

Vanilla Extract adds an extra layer of flavor to this recipe. As with any recipes which have just a few ingredients, be sure to use excellent ingredients. We love using homemade vanilla extract in our rice krispy treats.

Learn how to make your own vanilla extract in our Vanilla Extract Guide.

Dark Chocolate.

We use semi-sweet/dark chocolate baking chunks or chips for this recipe. Most dark chocolate for baking is 70 - 72% chocolate. Use the best quality dark chocolate available to you.

Marshmallows.

Use the marshmallows of your choice. This recipe calls for large marshmallows, but small marshmallows or marshmallow crème will also work.

1 cup of mini marshmallows = 8 large marshmallows = 5 ounces of marshmallow crème.

If you want to make vegan rice krispy treats, be sure to use vegan marshmallows, which are made with seaweed carrageenan or soy protein instead of an animal derived gelatin.

Butter.

When cooking and baking, we usually suggest using unsalted butter. In rice krispy treats where sweet is the predominant flavor, the extra bit of salt in salted butter works.

Again, this is an ingredient that needs adjusting if you are making vegan rice krispy treats. Substitute vegan butter or coconut oil for butter.

Rice Krispies Cereal. We know the original version of this recipe is from a big-brand cereal company, and yet, any brand of cereal will work!

Description

Rice Krispy Treats with dark chocolate are the ultimate childhood favorite. This Rice Krispy Treat variation adds a touch of smoky flavor with the addition of Bacon Salt!

Ingredients
  • 6 tbsp Salted Butter
  • 1 tsp Bacon Salt (Divided use)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 6 cup Marshmallows
  • 6 cup Rice Krispy Cereal
  • 2 cup Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1 tbsp Oil (neutral flavored)
Instructions
  1. Using 1 tablespoon of butter, butter a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.

  2. Melt the remaining 5 tablespoons of butter in a large saucepan over low heat.

  3. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of the Bacon Salt and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir until combined.

  4. Add the 6 cups of marshmallows. Stir just until melted.

  5. Remove from the heat. Add the 6 cups of Rice Krispy cereal. Quickly stir together.

  6. Spread into the buttered pan. Press down.

  7. Combine chocolate and oil in a microwavable bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well. Repeat the process until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Do not microwave for more than 30 seconds at one time, as the chocolate can burn.

  8. Spread the melted chocolate over the pan of rice krispy treats. Sprinkle the remaining ½ teaspoon of Bacon Salt over the chocolate. Allow to set for 2 hours.

  9. Enjoy!
