Tangy and Sweet Yogurt Dessert With Sumac

I learned how to make this easy 3 ingredient yogurt dessert recipe in Greece where it’s a go-to sweet treat for weeknights when budgets and time may be tight. And bonus – it’s healthy and delicious as well! 

The three ingredients? Yogurt, sweetened condensed milk, and sumac! 

I was a bit surprised and delighted to discover that sweetened condensed milk is the sweetener in this dessert. As a kid, we would sneak cans of sweetened condensed milk to snack on!  As an adult, I still find this sweet treat delectable. 

Sumac on the other hand, was brand-new to me. I soon learned it is a spice quite prevalent in the Middle East as well as Greece. It’s actually a dried ground berry with a tangy, sour flavor that tastes to me like a mix of raspberry and lemon. When ground into a spice, salt is added to prevent fermentation, which adds a salty layer to its sour taste.   

When all three ingredients are stirred together it becomes the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, making it a refreshing and light way to end a meal.

Ready to whip up this easy dessert in minutes? Here's what you'll need:

  • ½ cup plain yogurt (Although Greek yogurt isn’t really Greek, it works well in this recipe!) 
  • 2 - 4 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (adjust to your desired sweetness)
  • ¼ - ½ teaspoons sumac (start with ¼ teaspoon and adjust to taste)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the plain yogurt and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk together until smooth and creamy. The sweetened condensed milk adds a pretty shine to the yogurt. 
  2. Add ¼ teaspoon of sumac and stir well. Taste and adjust the amount of sumac to your preference.
  3. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for when you need a sweet treat!
